I was talking to a friend the day and she told me that she stopped using a health app. This health app was actually working for her it was tracking her workouts. The food she eats just fine.. She stopped using it because she felt weird about sharing all this personal stuff with the company that made the app. I mean she was telling them all about her body. What she eats and how she sleeps. She just felt like it was all too much you know like she was sharing much about herself. Then something weird happened. She started seeing ads for weight loss stuff, over the internet. It is possible that it was a coincidence but maybe not. This really confirmed what she was thinking. It showed her that her instincts were right about the thing. The situation was what she thought it was and that feeling she had was correct. Her instincts, about it were confirmed.
We are at a point with Artificial Intelligence and privacy in 2026. Artificial Intelligence is really useful. It helps us a lot.. At the same time we are getting a little worried about what happens to all the information we give to Artificial Intelligence.
The technology is getting better and better. It is becoming more helpful. We are using it more and more in our life.
Artificial Intelligence needs information to get better. It needs to know more about what we do and what we like. It needs details about us.. We are not really sure if we should be giving out all this information, about ourselves.
People have a need for data that never goes away. The need, for data just keeps going and going. It is like the data appetite of people is never full it always wants data. The data appetite that never stops is a thing.
AI systems really need a lot of data to work well. The data they get the better they do their job. For example a recommendation algorithm is very good when it knows what you bought. Also when you bought it. It is also helpful if it knows where you were when you bought something and what you looked at but did not buy. It even wants to know how long you thought about buying something before you actually did it. The algorithm also wants to know what you searched for and after you made a purchase. This is how AI systems like recommendation algorithms work better. They use a lot of information, about you and what you do. A health monitoring artificial intelligence system is really good at its job when it keeps an eye on your heart rate all the time. It also needs to know what you do every day like how much you move. The health monitoring intelligence system has to understand how you sleep too. Then it can put all of this information with what is going on around you like if you are stressed, what you eat and where you live, to get a complete picture of your health. The health monitoring intelligence system is all, about understanding your heart rate, activity patterns, sleep cycles, stress, diet and environment to help you.
This is a problem. We want Artificial Intelligence that really gets us so it can be really helpful. For that to happen Artificial Intelligence needs to keep an eye on us all the time. Artificial Intelligence needs to know what we are doing.
Your phone is always tracking where you are.
* Your smart home devices are always listening to what you say.
* Your fitness tracker is always checking on your body.
The websites you visit the things you buy the people you talk to and the way you talk to them are all being. Used to figure out what you will do next.
We want Artificial Intelligence to be useful. Artificial Intelligence is only useful if it knows a lot, about us.
We all make a deal without thinking about it. We give up our privacy to make things easier for ourselves. Now people are starting to wonder if this is really a trade. They want to know if they are getting what they deserve when they give up their privacy, for convenience. People are thinking about this a lot. They are not sure if it is a fair exchange.
The Black Box Problem
There is something that’s really unsettling. The companies that are building Artificial Intelligence systems do not always fully understand how Artificial Intelligence systems make decisions.
Artificial Intelligence, the deep learning systems work in a very complicated way. They use lots of steps that are so complicated it becomes very hard to figure out why the Artificial Intelligence system came to a certain decision.
This is really important for our privacy. When we want to borrow money and the bank says no we should know the reason why. When a computer program makes this decision by looking at lots of information. Some of which might be about things like the color of our skin. If we are a man or a woman. The computer program might be treating people unfairly which is against the law and what is right and nobody can say exactly where or how the computer program is doing this. Privacy matters enormously in this situation because the computer program is making decisions, about our loan based on privacy information.
An insurance company uses Artificial Intelligence to decide how much you pay based on things like what you studied in school what you buy and what you do on media. The Artificial Intelligence looks for connections, between these things. How likely you are to be a risk.. What if the connections it finds are really just a fancy way of judging you based on how much money you make or where you live? That is not fair. The problem is that these systems are so complicated that it is really hard to hold anyone for what they do. The insurance company uses Artificial Intelligence to set your rates. It is not clear how it makes these decisions.
Data Breaches in the AI Era
Traditional data breaches were really bad. Someone takes your credit card number you cancel the credit card. That is it.. The thing with Artificial Intelligence systems is that they often need a lot more sensitive information, from you and when that information gets stolen you cannot just cancel the information like you do with a credit card. Artificial Intelligence systems and the information they use are a problem when it comes to security.
Biometric data is an example of this. Things like recognition and fingerprints and voice patterns and even the way you walk are being used to keep things secure and personalized for you.. The thing is, you can not change your face if someone gets their hands on your biometric data. Your face is yours. It is yours forever which means if something bad happens and your biometric data gets stolen it is a problem that you will have to deal with forever. Biometric data, like recognition and fingerprints is very sensitive and once it is out there you can not take it back.
Medical Artificial Intelligence collects a lot of information about your health like the kind of diseases that run in your family and what is in your genes. Financial Artificial Intelligence keeps track of everything you buy and sell. It uses that information to build a detailed picture of how you spend your money. The Artificial Intelligence used by media sites knows who your friends are, what you think about politics and what you talk about in private. When you put all of this information together and look at it you get a complete picture of what you are like and it is a lot more personal, than what you would normally tell someone else about yourself.
Here is the thing: that data does not just sit in one place. It gets sold to companies shared with business partners and transferred when companies merge or get bought by another company. The Artificial Intelligence you shared your data with might get bought by a company whose practices you would never agree to. Your consent does not expire when the company changes owners. The Artificial Intelligence and your data are still there and that is a problem. The data you gave to the Artificial Intelligence does not just disappear when the company changes it is still being used by the owners of the Artificial Intelligence.
The Illusion of Control
Privacy policies have become long and complicated documents. Nobody really takes the time to read them. These documents are made to protect companies not to tell users what is happening to their information. You click the “agree” button because you have to, if you want to use the service. You do this because you need to not because you understand what you are getting into with your data. Privacy policies are supposed to help users. They do not. They are more, about protecting companies from getting in trouble. When you click “agree” you are not really making a choice you are just doing what you have to do to use the service and share your data.
When companies give people privacy controls they usually have the settings on to collect much data as possible. To stop this people have to find the settings which are hidden away in menus understand what the technical words mean and make a lot of choices. Companies do this on purpose because they know most people will not take the time to do it. People have to deal with privacy controls and the defaults are set to collect a lot of data from people. Privacy controls are like this because companies want to collect data, from people and they make it hard for people to opt out of data collection.
Sometimes you just cannot opt out. You can turn off the location tracking, on your phone. Then you will not be able to use maps. If you do not want to share your health data then the fitness features on your phone will not work. The idea that you have a choice is not really true. When it comes down to it you have to share your data if you want to use all the features of your phone like fitness features. Your phone will not work the way if you do not share data and that is a problem because you have come to rely on these features.
Different Rules for Different Places
Privacy protection is really different in places. The European Union has something called GDPR that gives people some power. With GDPR people have the right to see their information they can ask to have it removed and there are rules about how companies can use it. If companies do not follow the GDPR rules they can get in trouble which makes them want to do the right thing, with peoples information.
In the United States the way they handle privacy protection is over the place. California has some good laws when it comes to privacy protection.. Other states have different rules and regulations for privacy protection. When you look at the level there is no complete system in place, for privacy protection. This means that companies can do things with the data of American users that they would not be allowed to do with the data of European users.
This thing called lottery means that the privacy of a person like you depends on where you live.
The privacy of people depends on where they live.
Because Artificial Intelligence systems work all over the world they use data from many different places with different rules.
This creates a lot of complexity.
The complexity of the rules often helps companies of people like you.
The privacy of people, like you is affected by this complexity because Artificial Intelligence systems operate globally and the rules are different everywhere.
Children and AI: A Special Concern
Kids who are growing up today are having their information collected by intelligence from a really young age. There are apps that watch how they learn things. Some toys are even smart. They record what the kids say. The things they see on media are chosen by special algorithms during the years when they are figuring out who they are. All of this information about kids is being. Looked at closely and it is used to try to figure out what they will do and to make them do certain things. The artificial intelligence is always collecting data on kids. It is always trying to influence their behavior. Kids are being shaped by what they see on media and by the educational apps they use and, by the smart toys they play with.
The problem is not about privacy being violated now but also about what will happen in the future. When a company has a lot of information about someones childhood what do they do with that information? Can they use it to decide not to give them a job or something when they’re older? Could the things someone looked at on the internet when they were a kid actually affect their chances of getting a job or how much they pay for insurance when they are an adult? The thing that is really worrying is what these companies will do with the information they have about peoples childhood. Will the childhood information that companies have affect peoples opportunities later, in life like when they’re looking for a job or trying to get insurance?
Privacy laws are supposed to protect children in ways but it does not always work that way and the technology is changing really fast. The rules just can not keep up with it. Parents have a time dealing with this because they want their kids to be safe and have privacy. At the time kids want to be part of the digital world where everyone is sharing information and companies are collecting a lot of data, about them. Parents are trying to balance these things they want their kids to be safe and have privacy. They also want their kids to be able to use the internet and digital spaces like everyone else but privacy laws and the technology are making it really tough for them to do that.
- What trust actually requires is a lot of things. Trust is something that people talk about all the time. Trust is very important.
- When we say trust we mean that we believe in someone or something.
- Trust requires people to be honest with each other.
- People have to be truthful and sincere when they are talking to each other.
- Trust also requires people to be reliable.
- This means that people have to do what they say they will do.
* Be on time
* Keep promises
* Be kind to each other
- Trust is not something that happens overnight.
- It takes a time to build trust with someone.
- Trust is like a house that people build together.
- If someone is not honest or reliable the house will fall down.
- That is why trust requires people to work and be patient with each other.
- Trust is very important because it helps people feel safe and happy.
- When people trust each other they can be themselves. Do not have to worry about what other people think.
- Trust is a thing that makes life better for everyone.
- What trust actually requires is love and respect, for each other.
Companies are always talking about earning the trust of their users. The truth is that trust is not something that can be built with a bunch of words on a page. I mean think about it you can have a long privacy policy but that does not really mean much to people. What really matters is being transparent about what you’re doing. Companies need to be accountable, for their actions. They need to give users of their products and services real control over what happens with their personal information. This is what builds trust with users.
Transparency is when you tell people what information you are collecting from them. You need to explain why you need this information and what you will do with it. This is not about following the rules and telling people what they need to know. It is, about being honest and talking to people in a way that shows you respect them and think they are smart. Transparency means you use words to explain things so people can understand what you are doing with their information like the data you collect from them.
When things go wrong with accountability there should be consequences. For example if someones personal data gets stolen or if artificial intelligence systems treat people unfairly or if companies break their promises about keeping our information private then they should get in trouble. This trouble should be more than a letter saying they did something bad. There should be penalties for accountability. This is important, for accountability.
Control is about giving people choices. It is not, about having a lot of settings that most people will never even look at. Things should be set up to protect our privacy from the start. We should be able to see what information has been collected about us and be able to delete it if we want to. People should be able to use services without sharing a lot of data if that means they get fewer features. Control means we get to decide how our personal data is used.
The Path Forward
Some people think that the government should make companies follow rules to collect less data, from users. Others believe that people will start to want services that respect their privacy and companies will listen because they want people to use their services. The truth is that data collection and privacy will probably involve a bit of both with the government making some rules and people choosing services that respect data collection.
What is clear is that the current system, where users of the internet have little transparency, limited control and virtually no recourse when the privacy of the users is violated is not going to work for a long time. The thing about Artificial Intelligence is that as Artificial Intelligence becomes more capable and more pervasive in our lives the implications, for the privacy of the users become much more serious.
We are in a time of change where old ideas, about privacy are running into technological realities. The companies that are building these systems the governments that are regulating these systems and the people that are using these systems are all trying to figure out the limits of privacy that did not exist before. The people and the companies and the governments are all still learning about these technological realities and the privacy that comes with these systems.
The question isn’t whether we’ll continue using AI—that ship has sailed. It’s whether we’ll demand and create systems that provide the benefits of AI without requiring us to surrender intimate details of our lives to corporations whose interests don’t necessarily align with our own. Trust isn’t a nice-to-have feature. It’s foundational. And right now, it’s badly eroded and desperately needs rebuilding.
